About the Contest

Published works of romantic fiction from 11 different categories will be allowed to enter the competition. Entries from any book-length category which are authors' first books are eligible to be included in the Best First Book category.

To qualify, the novel/novella must be produced by a non-subsidy, non-vanity publisher in either print or electronic format.  A novel may be entered by the author, the author’s publicist, or the book's publisher in any of the 10 categories for novels.  A novella may be entered by the author, the author’s publicist, or the book's publisher into the novella category only.

All scores will be entered and tabulated via a web form.  All contest scores and data will be kept confidential from all readers, authors, and employees of Romance Conventions, Inc., except for the President, and Vice Presidents of the corporation, as required, until finalists can be notified.  Non-finaling authors will receive their score totals once finalists have been announced.

Finalists will be determined by the 5 top scoring entries in each category.

Readers’ Crown winners will remain strictly confidential until the winners are announced at the Costume Ball and Awards Ceremony at the RomCon Annual Readers’ Convention to be held July 9-11, 2010, in Denver, Colorado.

Are you an avid romance reader? Interested in judging a book contest?  We need you!

Apply to be a judge in The Readers' Crown™ Published Author Contest:

Each judge will receive FREE books to read and evaluate in the category that you choose.  Judges may sign up to judge multiple categories.  These books are yours to keep!  All scores will be entered into an electronic form via the Web, so you must have access to the Internet.

The score sheets have 20 questions, most of which are “select the highest rating that applies” type questions.  The score sheets can be completed in under a half-hour for each book.

Each judge will be presented with the opportunity to complete an optional reader preferences survey.  Any judge who completes the optional survey AND submits all scores for the panel(s) assigned to him/her will be given a discount code worth $10 off the 2010 RomCon™ in Denver, Colorado.  If the judge has already registered for RomCon™ 2010, a refund of $10 will be issued.  Each judge is eligible for only one $10 discount, regardless of how many panels they judge.

Judges must have a US or APO mailing address.  Readers’ Crown™ books will not be sent out of the country.

Contest Categories

ALL Categories: The romance needs to be the primary focus of the story and there should be a “Happily Ever After” or “Happy For Now” style ending.  Mainstream novels, literary fiction, mysteries and other types of stories without a romance focus will not do well in this contest.  It is up to the author to decide which category or subgenre best fits her work.

ALL ENTRIES must have an ORIGINAL copyright date of 2009.

Entry into multiple categories is allowed with separate entry forms and separate entry fees for each category.

All word counts are as counted by a computer.

All categories will have varying levels of sensuality, from mild to blazing.  Within the Erotic Romance category, the sensuality level will be blazing and more explicit language is expected and allowed.  Entrants are required to indicate their perception of the heat level of their work being entered (mild, hot, blazing).  Every effort possible will be made to pair entries with Readers' Crown judges who accept the indicated heat level.

ATTENTION!  When completing the contest entry forms, do not hit the back button or your transaction will be lost!  If you have multiple entries to submit, please do so by following the link you used to get to the form once again.
